Texas eyeing Reds’ arms after Seager, Semien signings

The Texas Rangers have made big headlines this MLB offseason for their infield acquisitions of shortstop Corey Seager and second baseman Marcus Semien. Apparently, the Rangers aren’t done yet. Per Jon Morosi of MLB Network, Texas is eyeing several star pitchers on the Cincinnati Reds.

Any one of these Reds’ pitchers- Luis Castillo, Sonny Gray, or Tyler Mahle- would be a big get for the Rangers’ rotation after the big Corey Seager and Marcus Semien signings.

The Rangers ranked 23rd in the MLB in team ERA and had one pitcher, Kyle Gibson, register an ERA below 4.00 while pitching for them in 2021 (Gibson was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies.)

Meanwhile, the Reds have had two pitchers, Castillo and Gray, pitch under a 4.00 ERA during their time in Cincinnati. They’ve also seen Tyler Mahle emerge as a solid pitcher, as Mahle won 13 games while pitching to a 3.75 ERA in over 180 innings last year.

Castillo, who is 28 years old and coming off one of the worst years of his career, might be the most expendable trade piece for the Reds- and the best get for the Rangers, given the ace-level stuff he’s shown in the past.

The Rangers have made big moves this offseason. However, if Texas can add to the signings of Seager and Semien with a trade for one of the Reds’ stud pitchers, they could find themselves among the MLB’s most improved teams next season.
