House backs Nov 23 holiday declaration in Benguet

The House of Representatives has approved on second reading a measure declaring a special non-working holiday in Benguet every November 23.

The holiday to be known as Benguet Day is in commemoration of the founding anniversary of the province.

ACT-CIS party-list Rep. Eric Yap, author of House Bill 10591 said the first civil government in Benguet was established on November 23, 1900.

“This day symbolizes that regardless the mountainous terrain, the vastness or even the remoteness of land, government is within reach, and all more necessary,” Yap said in the explanatory note of his measure.

Yap said the inception of the civil government under Act 48 with its then Civil Governor H.P. Whitmarsh has paved the way for sustained growth in the province.
