Representatives of Bayan Muna party-list have jointly filed a resolution seeking congressional investigation on the proliferation of text scams and spams in the country.
In House Resolution 2393, Representatives Carlos Isagani Zarate, Ferdinand Gaite, and Eufemia Cullamat urged the House Committee on Information and Communication Technology to investigate in aid of legislation the source and those responsible for the proliferation of text scams.
“Kailangan talagang mag-ingat tayo sa ngayon di lang sa COVID kundi mismo sa ating mga personal data dahil madaming nanongolekta nito para ibenta sa mga negosyante o scammers o ang iba pa nga ay sa surveillance,” Zarate said.
Government agencies have recorded a spike in the number of text scams and spam.
The resolution said the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), and National Privacy Commission (NPC) should immediately further strengthen their monitoring, safeguard, and regulatory mechanisms to prevent and stop the proliferation of text scams that could affect and/or endanger the lives of the Filipino people.
