Chaos is reigning in the camp of Manila Mayor Isko Moreno as different factions seek control of his presidential campaign.
Sources told Politiko that the faction led by veteran political strategist Lito Banayo and former senator Sergio Osmeña III is at odds with Moreno’s city hall staff, who are helping his campaign aside from minding day to day affairs of the local government.
Adding to the tension is the presence of former “Yellow” personalities identified with the Aquino administration, who have bet on Moreno instead of Vice President Leni Robredo.
There are also people connected to President Rodrigo Duterte and former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who are working for Moreno in hopes of a handsome payback should he win in 2022.
Politiko’s sources said each faction is at odds with one another since they have different motivations for helping Moreno and conflicting ideas for his campaign.
Cracks are showing in Moreno’s team despite Banayo’s insistence that their campaign is going on smoothly.
ABS-CBN broadcaster Noli De Castro withdrew his candidacy as senator on the same day Politiko reported the resignation of Moreno’s chief of staff, Cesar Chavez.
De Castro planned to run under Moreno’s Aksyon Demokratiko. He cited a change of plans as the reason for his withdrawal.
Chavez, meanwhile, said he received an offer to work at dzRH radio station. This was in contrast to Moreno’s statement that his (now) former chief of staff needed to quit for health reasons.
In August, political strategist Malou Tiquia resigned as president of Universidad de Manila while abogado George Garcia stepped down as dean of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila’s College of Law.
Will other supporters or newfound allies bolt Moreno’s team in the coming days? Abangan.
