San Diego fires manager Jayce Tingler after epic collapse

The San Diego Padres fired manager Jayce Tingler on Wednesday after an epic late-season collapse made them the most disappointing team in baseball this season. Tingler has been offered a different role in the organization.

The Padres put out this release to announce the news:

San Diego entered the 2021 campaign with sky-high expectations, and things went pretty well for much of the season. While the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers proved to be the cream of the crop in the NL West, the Padres were in the playoff hunt and had a top MVP candidate in Fernando Tatis Jr.

Then the bottom totally fell out, with an epic fall resulting in a 79-83 record. There was also a very notable dugout incident involving Tatis and fellow star Manny Machado, only adding to the ugliness of the situation in San Diego.

Tingler was hired after the 2019 season, meaning he only got two seasons at the helm. He got the Padres to the playoffs in his first season and finished second in NL Manager of the Year voting. San Diego beat the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Wild Card Series before getting swept by the Dodgers in the NLDS.

The Padres hadn’t made the playoffs since 2006 prior to last season, but the ugliness of this 2021 campaign cost Tingler his job. It just shows how fickle sports can be, especially when expectations are high.
